17 Killed in Massive Blast at Fireworks Factory in Tamil Nadu
At least 17 people were killed and several others injured in a powerful explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in southern Tamil Nadu on Sunday, officials said, in one of the deadliest industrial accidents in the region in recent years.
According to initial reports from local authorities, the explosion occurred at a fireworks factory in Virudhunagar district, near Kattanarpatti village. The blast claimed at least 17 lives on the spot, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Officials said the explosion was so intense that it flattened multiple sheds within the facility and triggered a fire that took hours to bring under control. Most of the victims were workers present at the site when the explosion occurred. Several bodies were charred beyond recognition, complicating identification efforts.
Preliminary reports suggest that the explosion may have been caused by the mishandling of highly combustible chemicals used in firecracker production. However, authorities said a detailed forensic investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
“Rescue operations were launched immediately after the incident. Fire and rescue teams, along with local police, worked through the debris to locate survivors,” a senior district official said. Emergency responders faced difficulties due to the intensity of the blaze and the presence of explosive materials at the site.
Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expressed grief over the loss of lives and said Ministers K K S S R Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu were directed to rush to the spot. He also assured that those injured would receive full medical support at the government’s expense.
“The incident is deeply tragic. A thorough inquiry has been ordered, and strict action will be taken against those found responsible for any negligence,” the Chief Minister said in a statement.
Fireworks manufacturing is a major cottage industry in parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly around Sivakasi, often referred to as India’s fireworks capital. However, the sector has frequently come under scrutiny due to recurring accidents linked to safety violations and improper handling of explosive materials.
Local residents reported hearing a loud explosion, followed by thick plumes of smoke rising from the factory premises. “The sound was deafening, and within minutes, flames engulfed the area,” a witness said.
Authorities have sealed off the site and launched a probe into the incident. Police have registered a case against the factory management under relevant sections related to negligence. Teams from the Labour Department and industrial safety authorities have also been directed to inspect similar units in the region.
The tragedy has once again highlighted concerns over safety compliance in the fireworks industry, with experts calling for stricter enforcement of regulations and improved working conditions to prevent such incidents in the future.
