Nitish Kumar’s Delhi Visit: Bihar Chief Minister to Meet PM Modi and Amit Shah
Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday departed for New Delhi for a series of high-level meetings with the top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The visit is being closely watched in political circles, as it comes at a crucial time for both the state government and the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre.
According to senior leaders of the Janata Dal (United), the Chief Minister is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Shah and other senior BJP leaders on Monday. He is expected to return to Patna later in the evening. Party sources said this will be the first formal round of meetings between Nitish Kumar and the BJP’s top leadership since the swearing-in of the new Bihar government last month, a ceremony that was attended by both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister.
The meetings are being seen as significant not only from a political standpoint but also from a governance and development perspective. Shortly after the formation of the new government, the Nitish Kumar administration rolled out the third phase of its ambitious ‘7 Resolves’ programme, which is aimed at giving Bihar a fresh push in areas such as infrastructure, education, employment generation, health services and industrial growth. With this new phase underway, the state government is keen on ensuring strong coordination with the Centre to translate policy commitments into tangible outcomes on the ground.
A senior JD(U) leader said the discussions in Delhi are likely to focus on creating a clear and structured roadmap for Bihar’s development. “The Chief Minister’s meeting with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister is important because it will help align the state’s priorities with central policies. Delivering on promises related to investment, industrialisation and job creation requires close cooperation between the Centre and the state,” the leader said. He added that Bihar has benefited from central assistance in the past and that continued financial support will be crucial for accelerating development projects in the coming years.
Centre-state coordination has often been highlighted by the Nitish Kumar government as a key factor in implementing large-scale infrastructure and welfare programmes. With Bihar seeking to attract more private investment and strengthen its industrial base, the state leadership is expected to press for policy support, faster project clearances and additional funding from the Centre. Officials indicated that discussions could also cover ongoing central schemes and how they can be better integrated with state-level initiatives to maximise their impact.
The timing of the visit has also drawn attention due to recent organisational changes within the BJP. Nitin Nabin, who was a minister in Nitish Kumar’s cabinet until recently, was elevated as the BJP’s national working president and resigned from the Bihar cabinet last week. Party sources said Nabin is likely to meet the Chief Minister during his Delhi visit. His elevation is seen as a sign of the BJP’s focus on strengthening its organisational structure at the national level while maintaining close coordination with its allies in states like Bihar.
In addition, the BJP has appointed Sanjay Saraogi as its new state president in Bihar. Saraogi had earlier served as a minister in the previous Nitish Kumar government, and his appointment is being viewed as an attempt to ensure continuity and smooth coordination between the two alliance partners. Political observers believe these organisational changes could have implications for the functioning of the NDA government in Bihar, making Nitish Kumar’s consultations in Delhi all the more important.
Another senior JD(U) leader said the Chief Minister may also use the opportunity to discuss the next phase of cabinet expansion in Bihar. “Some ministerial berths are still vacant, and consultations are expected on who could be accommodated in the next expansion. The Chief Minister may want to take the BJP leadership into confidence while finalising names and portfolios,” the leader said. Such discussions are seen as routine but important for maintaining balance and cohesion within the coalition government.
Apart from political and administrative matters, Nitish Kumar’s Delhi visit is also expected to include personal engagements. Sources said the Chief Minister may undergo a routine medical check-up during his stay in the national capital. He had earlier received treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), including an eye surgery, and has been known to combine official visits to Delhi with scheduled health check-ups.
Political analysts note that the outcome of the meetings could set the tone for Bihar’s governance trajectory over the coming months. With the state facing challenges such as unemployment, migration, infrastructure gaps and the need for industrial growth, effective collaboration between the Centre and the state will be crucial. The BJP-JD(U) alliance, which has a long history of cooperation and occasional tensions, will be keen to project unity and stability as it moves forward with its development agenda.
The visit also comes at a time when national politics is witnessing renewed focus on alliance management and state-specific development models. For Nitish Kumar, who has positioned himself as an experienced administrator with a strong emphasis on governance, the meetings provide an opportunity to reinforce Bihar’s priorities at the highest level of the central government.
As the Chief Minister prepares for his meetings with Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, expectations remain high that the discussions will result in a clearer vision for Bihar’s development, improved Centre-state coordination and a more cohesive functioning of the ruling alliance. The political and administrative signals emerging from these talks are likely to shape the next phase of governance in the state.
