Vijay Set to Take Oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on Saturday After Securing Support from Congress, Left Parties and VCK
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at 11 am on Saturday after formally staking claim to form the government with the support of the Congress, Left parties and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK).
The development marks a dramatic political shift in Tamil Nadu, with the actor-turned-politician poised to assume the state’s top post within months of his party emerging as a major force in the Assembly elections.
After receiving letters of support from the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), and VCK, Vijay met Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Friday evening at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai and submitted his claim to form the government.
Officials familiar with the meeting said the governor accepted the letters of support and invited Vijay to take oath as chief minister on Saturday morning.
Congress Extends Support; IUML Offers Outside Backing
The Congress party, which had earlier indicated its willingness to support a non-BJP coalition in the state, also extended support to the TVK-led alliance, strengthening Vijay’s numbers in the Assembly.
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has meanwhile assured outside support to the incoming government, adding to the stability of the coalition arrangement.
Coalition Arithmetic Gives TVK Comfortable Edge
Political observers said the support from Congress, the Left parties and VCK gives the TVK-led combine a workable majority in the Assembly, clearing the path for Vijay’s elevation as chief minister.
Senior leaders from allied parties were present during consultations held in Chennai on Friday ahead of the meeting with the governor. Sources said discussions were also held on portfolio allocation and coordination mechanisms for the coalition government.
The oath-taking ceremony is expected to be attended by leaders from alliance parties, film personalities, and thousands of TVK supporters from across the state.
Vijay’s Political Rise Reshapes Tamil Nadu Politics
Vijay’s rise from cinema superstar to chief minister-designate has significantly altered Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, traditionally dominated by the Dravidian majors.
Launching TVK with a promise of clean governance, youth-centric policies and administrative reforms, Vijay managed to convert his mass popularity into electoral success, particularly among young and first-time voters.
Throughout the campaign, the TVK chief focused on issues including unemployment, corruption, education, welfare delivery and industrial growth. His speeches frequently targeted both the ruling establishment and traditional opposition parties, positioning TVK as an alternative political force.
Supporters Celebrate Across Tamil Nadu
Celebrations erupted across several parts of Tamil Nadu after news emerged that Vijay had secured the backing needed to form the government.
TVK workers distributed sweets, burst crackers and gathered outside party offices in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchirapalli late into the night.
Security arrangements have been intensified around the Raj Bhavan and the venue of the swearing-in ceremony, with senior police officials overseeing preparations ahead of Saturday’s event.
Cabinet Formation Likely Soon
Sources in the alliance indicated that the first list of ministers could be announced shortly after the oath-taking ceremony. Discussions are underway regarding representation for alliance partners in the cabinet.
The incoming administration is expected to hold its first cabinet meeting later in the day, where key decisions related to governance priorities and administrative appointments may be taken.
With Vijay preparing to take office as chief minister, Tamil Nadu appears set to enter a new political phase shaped by coalition politics and the emergence of a new regional power centre.
