Lockdown Rumours in India ‘Completely False’, Say Union Ministers
The Union government on Friday firmly dismissed widespread rumours suggesting the possibility of a nationwide lockdown, with senior ministers asserting that no such proposal is under consideration. The clarification comes amid growing speculation on social media platforms and messaging apps that had triggered public concern in several parts of the country.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharamancategorically rejected the claims, terming them “completely false” and “baseless.” Both leaders urged citizens not to fall prey to misinformation and to rely only on official government communication.
Addressing reporters, Puri said there is “no proposal under consideration” within the government to impose any form of lockdown. “These rumours are entirely unfounded. There is no discussion, no plan, and no need for such a measure at this stage,” he stated, adding that the government remains focused on maintaining stability in essential supplies and economic activity.
Echoing similar sentiments, Sitharaman emphasized that the government has not initiated any consultations or internal deliberations on reimposing restrictions akin to those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Let me make it absolutely clear: there is no proposal under consideration for a lockdown. Such rumours are misleading and unnecessary,” she said.
The ministers’ statements come at a time when India is closely monitoring global developments, particularly geopolitical tensions and their potential economic implications. However, officials reiterated that the current situation does not warrant extreme measures like lockdowns, and there is no cause for panic among the public.
Government sources indicated that the rumours may have originated from unverified social media posts that misinterpreted precautionary advisories or conflated unrelated developments. Authorities have urged citizens to verify information through official channels, including government press releases and credible news outlets, before sharing it further.
The Centre also stressed that essential commodities, including fuel and cooking gas, remain adequately stocked. Officials pointed out that logistical operations and supply chains are functioning normally, and there is no disruption that would necessitate restrictions on movement or economic activity.
Over the past few days, several states reported instances of panic buying in response to the circulating claims. Retailers in some urban centres witnessed a temporary spike in demand for groceries and household essentials. However, authorities have reassured the public that such reactions are unwarranted.
Experts note that misinformation during uncertain times can lead to unnecessary anxiety and disrupt normal life. “Rumours about lockdowns can have a cascading effect, from panic buying to market volatility. It is important for people to stay informed through reliable sources,” a senior official said.
The government has also reiterated its commitment to transparency and timely communication. Officials said that any major policy decision affecting the public would be announced formally through established channels, leaving no room for speculation.
India had imposed a nationwide lockdown in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the strictest in the world at the time. Since then, the country has gradually transitioned to a more calibrated approach to managing crises, focusing on targeted interventions rather than blanket restrictions.
Union ministers underlined that the current administrative strategy prioritizes economic continuity while ensuring preparedness for any emerging challenges. “We have learned from past experiences. Our approach now is balanced and data-driven,” a government official noted.
As misinformation continues to circulate in the digital age, authorities have called for collective responsibility among citizens, media platforms, and stakeholders to curb the spread of false narratives. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) and other agencies have been actively countering misleading claims through fact-checking initiatives.
For now, the government’s message remains unequivocal: there is no lockdown being planned, and normal life should continue without fear.
