Gold ring, ₹2,500 a month: TVK’s welfare pitch for women seeks to outbid rivals ahead of Tamil Nadu polls
With the Tamil Nadu Assembly election drawing closer, actor-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) have announced an extensive set of welfare promises aimed primarily at women voters, signalling the start of an intense contest with established Dravidian parties over social welfare policies.
At a recent public event focused on women’s welfare, Vijay unveiled what he described as a comprehensive support package designed to improve the economic security of women and strengthen their role in household finances. The most prominent proposal is a monthly assistance of ₹2,500 for women heads of families, which the party says would provide steady financial support to households facing rising living costs.
Alongside the cash support plan, TVK has promised a gold ring for newborn girl children, a symbolic measure the party says would encourage families to celebrate the birth of daughters. The party has also proposed marriage assistance that would include gold and silk sarees for brides from economically weaker backgrounds, a welfare approach that echoes earlier schemes introduced by Dravidian parties but with expanded benefits.
Another proposal includes the distribution of six free LPG cylinders every year to families in order to ease the burden of rising cooking gas prices. The party also promised free sanitary napkins through ration shops and educational institutions to improve menstrual hygiene and health awareness among women and girls.
Vijay further pledged that if TVK forms the government, it would continue free bus travel for women in state-run buses, strengthen support for women’s self-help groups, and introduce stricter law-and-order measures to deal with crimes against women.
Political observers say the announcement reflects TVK’s attempt to build support among women voters, who form one of the most influential electoral blocs in Tamil Nadu.
DMK’s existing welfare schemes for women
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, already operates several large-scale welfare programmes aimed at women.
The flagship initiative is the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme, launched in 2023, which provides ₹1,000 per month to eligible women heads of households through direct bank transfers. The programme covers more than one crore beneficiaries and is one of the largest cash-transfer schemes for women in the state.
Another widely used programme is the free bus travel scheme for women in government buses, which has significantly reduced transportation costs for working women, students and daily wage earners across Tamil Nadu.
The DMK government has also introduced the Pudhumai Penn scheme, which provides financial assistance to girls pursuing higher education after completing school in government institutions. The programme aims to improve female education levels and reduce dropout rates.
In addition, the state has continued support for women’s self-help groups, offering easier access to loans and financial assistance for small businesses run by women.
AIADMK’s proposals and past initiatives
The main opposition party, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), has also emphasised women-focused welfare in its political strategy.
The party has indicated that if it returns to power, it would introduce a monthly financial assistance of ₹2,000 for women heads of households, positioning it as a counter to the DMK’s current ₹1,000 support scheme.
During previous AIADMK governments, particularly under former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, several welfare programmes targeted women’s empowerment. Among them was the Amma Two-Wheeler Scheme, which offered subsidies to working women to purchase scooters, enabling easier access to jobs and education.
AIADMK administrations also implemented marriage assistance schemes that included financial support and gold for brides from low-income families, along with initiatives aimed at improving women’s safety, including the establishment of all-women police stations across the state.
Welfare politics intensifies in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu’s politics has long been shaped by welfare-based governance, with successive governments competing to expand social support programmes.
With the DMK already running major welfare schemes and AIADMK promising its own financial assistance programme, TVK’s announcement of a ₹2,500 monthly allowance along with gold and other benefits marks a significant escalation in the competition for women voters.
As the election approaches, analysts expect welfare promise particularly those aimed at women to become one of the defining themes of the campaign, reflecting the decisive role female voters continue to play in the state’s political landscape.
