Uttarakhand CM Recommends CBI Probe into Ankita Bhandari Murder Case
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the murder of Ankita Bhandari, a move that comes amid sustained public pressure and demands from the victim’s family for an independent and transparent investigation.
Announcing the decision, the chief minister said the state government is committed to ensuring justice in the case and that a CBI inquiry would help address concerns raised about the investigation so far. He added that the recommendation was made in the interest of fairness, accountability, and to maintain public confidence in the rule of law.
The Ankita Bhandari case has remained a deeply sensitive issue in Uttarakhand since the young woman was reported missing in September 2022 and was later found dead. The case sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests across the state and calls for strict action against those involved. While the state police had earlier filed charges and the trial is underway, sections of the public and civil society groups continued to demand a CBI probe, alleging possible lapses and the need for a more independent investigation.
Officials said the state government will extend full cooperation to the central agency once the Union government grants approval and formally assigns the probe to the CBI. Legal experts note that the transfer of investigation may involve a review of existing evidence, witness statements, and forensic reports, while the ongoing judicial process will continue as per law.
The victim’s family welcomed the chief minister’s recommendation, expressing hope that a central probe would bring greater clarity and ensure that all those responsible are held accountable. Opposition parties, while acknowledging the move, reiterated their demand for a time-bound investigation and swift justice.
With the recommendation now sent, attention turns to the Centre’s response and the next steps in a case that has come to symbolise the demand for justice and transparency in crimes against women in the state.
