UAE President’s India Visit Seals Strategic Defence Framework, Long-Term LNG Deals
The President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, paid an official visit to India during which New Delhi and Abu Dhabi agreed to work towards a structured framework for a strategic defence partnership and concluded long-term agreements for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The visit marked a further deepening of bilateral ties that have expanded steadily beyond trade and energy into defence and security cooperation.
President Mohamed bin Zayed held delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on strengthening institutional linkages between the two countries and identifying areas for sustained collaboration over the long term. Officials said the discussions reflected a shared intent to anchor the partnership in predictable and mutually beneficial mechanisms.
Defence Cooperation Takes a Strategic Turn
A key outcome of the visit was the decision to jointly develop a formal framework for a strategic defence partnership. According to officials, the proposed framework will lay down guiding principles and priority areas for defence cooperation, including joint training programmes, regular military exercises, defence industry collaboration and enhanced maritime security coordination.
Both sides acknowledged that closer defence engagement is necessary given the changing security environment in the Indian Ocean Region and West Asia. The framework is expected to provide a long-term roadmap for cooperation between defence establishments, moving beyond ad hoc engagements to regular and structured interaction.
India and the UAE already share defence ties through naval exercises and exchanges between armed forces. The new initiative aims to consolidate these efforts and explore cooperation in emerging areas such as cyber security, space applications and critical technologies linked to national security.
Securing Energy Through Long-Term LNG Deals
Energy security formed the second pillar of the discussions. India and the UAE finalised long-term LNG purchase agreements that will enable Indian companies to procure natural gas from UAE suppliers under stable and predictable terms.
Officials noted that the long-term contracts would help India manage its rising energy needs while reducing vulnerability to price fluctuations in the global spot LNG market. Natural gas is a key component of India’s plans to transition towards cleaner energy sources, particularly for power generation, fertilisers and city gas distribution.
For the UAE, the agreements reinforce its position as a dependable energy partner for India. The country is already a major supplier of crude oil and LPG to India, and the LNG deals further broaden the energy relationship.
Broadening the Strategic Partnership
During the talks, the two leaders reviewed the overall progress of bilateral relations, including trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges. They took note of the growth in trade following the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and stressed the need to diversify cooperation into sectors such as infrastructure, renewable energy, digital technologies and food security.
On defence manufacturing, India invited UAE entities to explore joint ventures and co-production opportunities with Indian companies. Discussions also covered investment prospects in ports, logistics and industrial corridors, where UAE firms already have a growing presence.
Regional and Global Perspectives
President Mohamed bin Zayed and Prime Minister Modi exchanged views on developments in West Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region. They underlined the importance of maintaining stability, ensuring freedom of navigation and resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomatic means.
Counter-terrorism cooperation was another area of convergence, with both sides reiterating their commitment to tackling terrorism and extremism in all forms. Officials said information sharing and coordination between security agencies would continue to be strengthened.
People-to-People Links and Future Engagement
The leaders highlighted the role of the Indian community in the UAE as a bridge between the two countries. They also discussed expanding cooperation in education, healthcare and skill development, with an emphasis on innovation and knowledge exchange.
Officials indicated that the agreements and understandings reached during the visit would be followed by detailed consultations to operationalise the defence framework and implement the LNG contracts.
The visit by President Mohamed bin Zayed underscores the evolving nature of India–UAE relations, which are increasingly shaped by strategic considerations alongside traditional economic ties. With defence and energy cooperation gaining greater institutional depth, both countries appear set to further strengthen their partnership in the years ahead.
