TVK Announces Candidates For Tamil Nadu Polls; Vijay To Contest From Two Seats
The Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) on Monday unveiled its list of candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with party president Vijay set to contest from two constituencies Perambur and Trichy East, marking his formal electoral debut.
Addressing party workers and media in Chennai, Vijay said the decision to contest from two seats was aimed at strengthening the party’s presence across regions and signalling confidence in TVK’s grassroots outreach. While the party has not officially disclosed the constituencies, senior leaders indicated that one seat is likely to be in northern Tamil Nadu and the other in the southern belt.
The announcement comes ahead of the single-phase polling scheduled on April 23 for all 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu. The results are expected to play a crucial role in determining whether the newly floated TVK can disrupt the State’s entrenched bipolar political landscape.
Candidate List and Strategy
TVK released a near-complete list of candidates, fielding a mix of political newcomers, professionals and grassroots workers. Party sources said a significant number of candidates are first-time entrants into electoral politics, reflecting Vijay’s stated commitment to “clean governance and generational change”.
The party has also attempted to ensure social representation, with candidates drawn from diverse communities, including women and youth leaders. Insiders said the selection process focused on local credibility, public service record and alignment with the party’s anti-corruption plank.
Political observers note that TVK’s strategy appears aimed at positioning itself as an alternative to the dominant Dravidian parties, while capitalising on Vijay’s popularity among younger voters and urban constituencies.
Asset Declaration by Vijay
Alongside the candidate announcement, Vijay filed his nomination papers and submitted a detailed affidavit declaring assets worth approximately ₹625 crore. The declaration includes investments in real estate, production ventures and other financial instruments.
The affidavit also disclosed loans extended to family members, though party representatives clarified that these were “transparent financial transactions” duly reported in compliance with election norms.
Election officials confirmed that the disclosures were in line with requirements mandated by the Election Commission, which requires candidates to publicly declare their financial assets, liabilities and sources of income.
Political Significance
Vijay’s entry into electoral politics has generated significant interest, given his long-standing influence as a film star and his growing political messaging in recent years. Analysts say his decision to contest two seats mirrors strategies adopted by established leaders to maximise political reach and mitigate electoral risk.
However, they caution that translating cinematic popularity into electoral success remains a challenge, particularly in a State with deeply entrenched party structures and loyal voter bases.
The ruling Dravidian parties have so far responded cautiously to TVK’s emergence, with leaders stating that the electorate will ultimately decide the party’s relevance.
Election Outlook
With polling set for April 23, campaigning is expected to intensify in the coming weeks. Key issues likely to dominate the election narrative include employment, welfare delivery, infrastructure and governance.
TVK is expected to run a campaign centred on anti-corruption, youth empowerment and administrative reform, themes Vijay reiterated during his address.
As Tamil Nadu heads into a high-stakes electoral contest, all eyes will be on whether Vijay’s political gamble can convert star power into votes and reshape the State’s political dynamics.
