Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has sharply criticised Canada’s public healthcare system following the death of an Indian-origin man who allegedly died due to medical negligence after waiting for hours for treatment at a hospital in Edmonton. His remarks came after reports claimed that the victim’s wife was allegedly told she was being “rude” by hospital staff after her husband died while waiting to be seen in the emergency room for more than eight hours, despite complaining of chest pain.

The incident occurred earlier this week at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. The victim, Prashant Sreekumar, a 44-year-old Indian-origin Canadian national and father of three, reportedly experienced severe chest pain while at work. He was taken to the hospital’s emergency department, where he was asked to wait for an extended period before receiving medical attention.
According to media reports, Sreekumar repeatedly complained of worsening chest pain but remained unattended for several hours. He reportedly collapsed and died before a doctor could examine him. The prolonged wait time in an emergency setting has raised serious questions about triage procedures, staffing shortages, and systemic delays within Canada’s healthcare system.
Canadian media outlet Global News reported that Sreekumar waited for more than eight hours in the emergency room. His family has alleged that timely medical intervention could have saved his life.

“He told me, ‘Papa, I cannot bear the pain,’’ the grieving father said, adding that the family never imagined that someone seeking emergency care would be left waiting for so long.

“The person is of Indian origin, but he happens to be a Canadian national. So, obviously the government of Canada should take responsibility in this particular matter,” Jaiswal said during a press briefing.
Calling the death an “unfortunate incident,” the MEA expressed deep condolences to Sreekumar’s family and assured that Indian officials are closely coordinating with local authorities in Canada to understand the circumstances leading to his death.
“Our consulate is providing all possible assistance to the family,” Jaiswal added.
